Keep up to date on what is happening at our campuses!
The Grade 3s had a 3s day on the 3/3/2023! What a fun theme it was and their choice of outfits was of their own "3will". Our Grade 3s came to school in some very creative attire, some arrived wearing 3 pairs of shorts, 3 T-shirts, 3 hats, 3 shoes and even 3 ponytails. What silly, crazy fun!

The Grade 2s completed their Randoms Acts of Kindness (RAK) challenge this week at our Blouberg campus and it was lovely to hear about all the love they shared and how it made them feel bringing joy to others. We are hoping that they have learned that an act of kindness, no matter how small, can make a huge impact on others.

A selected group of our Grade 11 & 12 Design students attended the Vega Vibe Brand Challenge held over the past weekend. This exciting annual event puts students in the real world in order to give tangible substance to what it means to be creatively strategic and strategically creative.
Our students were challenged to create an awareness campaign for Birdlife SA. This included thinking of innovative ways to target young adults (age 10-25yrs) to become interested in Bird life by conceptualising interesting events and activities.

The Grade 9s took part in the annual business simulation game, Banango Traders.
Our students were put into teams to form a company and then had a wonderful morning competing against the other businesses while strategising and planning around stock control, pricing and marketing decisions.
It was a wonderful opportunity to be able to experience and apply the knowledge learned in class, outside of the classroom.

In the Pre-Preparatory, we started off the term with great excitement, meeting the new Grade 000s, and welcoming back our Grade Rs and Grade 00s. We explored different skills such as crossing the midline through activities like bean bag waist passing and criss-cross walking. Hand-eye coordination and foot-eye coordination are important skills for our little ones to learn. Throwing and catching a beanbag is a great way to work on this skill and adding in a clap proved a bit of an extra challenge, which the children were eager to take on!
Kicking a soccer ball and seeing how far they could kick it was great fun. Running and jumping over the smaller hurdles and crawling under the bigger hurdles was a great way to work on the children’s cardiovascular endurance and spatial awareness. Even though it has been hot, the children have been so enthusiastic. We look forward to seeing our younger children growing stronger as they continue to grow and develop through movement.

The Grade 4s have spent time building on their coding knowledge by learning and consolidating basic coding concepts like commands, algorithms, repeats or loops, conditionals and variables. They have done this using the self-paced coding environment of Code.org.
The Grade 5s have been focused on design and technology skills. They have been conceptualising, building, testing and then adapting fantasy creatures, out of recycled materials, that have built-in, pneumatic or hydraulic-powered moving parts. This task also encourages them to practise their creative and logical thinking skills, as well as their collaboration and communication skills.
The Grade 6s have been enjoying our new Lego Spike Prime robotics kits. Each week, working in pairs, they have been set a challenge that requires them to follow instructions to build a robotic device, programme it to move in a desired manner, and then spend time improving the code that drives its basic functionality.

From learning about the basics of a keyboard and how to use a mouse, to tackling their first coding and typing assignments our Prep students are jumping feet first into the IT labs as they become accustomed to desktop computers, their Google accounts, and learning the difference between a username, email and password.
In the coming weeks the Grade Rs, 1s and 3s will once again be participating in the NWEA MAP benchmark assessment. Currently, NWEA assessments are used by over 9,500 schools in 145 countries. This will help our teachers track skills mastery and benchmark academic growth over time.

By implementing technology as an integral part of education, the Prep students at both the Sunningdale & Blouberg campuses are introduced to and learn about a digital world and acquire technological and digital skills that will benefit them in this age.
The integration of iPads in the classroom creates a learning environment to help children communicate, collaborate, create and demonstrate critical thinking while both consuming and producing digital content.
With the world rapidly moving towards coding it is paramount that learners are prepared for the jobs of tomorrow, regardless of which path they will choose. Learning to code develops their logical, computational and analytical thinking skills too.
Our aim is for our students to be academically empowered, respectful and responsible with technology and to utilise technology as a tool to authentic learning.

Technology in the classroom helps children to engage and broadens their learning experience. The Grade 00 Chameleons and Dolphins at our Sunningdale campus were introduced to technology by having the opportunity to explore and discover shapes in and around the classroom.

The Grade 6s have kicked off their Natural Science module with experiments, sugar and fun! They were put into small groups and given free reign to try and solve a scientific problem. After many trials, disagreements, compromises and questioning - they came to realise that a process was needed! This allowed them to introduce The Scientific Method which gave them an understanding of what it is, why we use it in science and how it allows us to investigate better.

One of the many ways children learn about and make sense of the world around them is by exploring different textures and materials. This heightens their senses and enriches their learning. Language development, problem-solving skills, gross motor skills, awareness and social interaction are all areas stimulated during sensory play.
At our Sunningdale campus the Grade R children enjoyed a sensory walk experience. The children were encouraged to step onto and into various tactile elements such as slippery cooked green spaghetti, cold ice blocks, silky soft sea sand, hard pebbles and much more! The squeals of delight and groans of horror as spaghetti squished through their toes was a treat to observe.

Our Grade 6s have enjoyed immersing themselves in the novel, “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio, this term. The themes of 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙮 come through strongly as does the idea of a precept. This was introduced by Mr Browne, August’s English teacher, who defined a precept as “𝙖𝙣𝙮 𝙨𝙖𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙧 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙪𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪”.
Following on from this, our students had to choose a precept of their own that would be relevant for the year ahead, and that could be used to draw wisdom from and help in tough times. They then wrote a reflective writing piece on these and ended off by presenting them to the class.

There was so much to investigate with this theme! The Grade R Badgers and Otters enjoyed a sensory walk at our Blouberg campus where they used all their senses to explore the school. During art time, they created a textured hand with materials they collected on their walk as well as finger painting and painting with coffee and so much more.
The best was exploring the sense of taste! The Grade Rs enjoyed a fun taste ring where they tried sour worms, salty chips, bitter and sweet chocolate, and a mint as our palate cleanser.

On Friday the 3rd of February history was made. The students of Elkanah came together as one to get behind the water polo teams, who were set to face off against Paarl Boys. All was set with War cries going from the morning all through the day until the final match between the two 1st Teams. The student section was on fire throughout the game as the blue wall jumped up and down. Which boosted our team to the WIN of the year. Never have I ever seen GEES like that.
While discovering more about “My Body”, one of the things we did, was to ask the Grade 00 Dolphins questions about themselves; questions that made them think. Questions like these encourage goal setting, give them choices and help them to practice age-appropriate decision-making skills, which in turn helps to instill self-awareness and confidence. This led to an art activity where they had to draw a picture of what they want to be when they grow up one day. Our young Dolphins have some interesting goals in sight, even from such a young age!

Grade 3s at our Blouberg campus had a wonderful and fun-filled time for Friendship Day this week.
Each Grade 3 child was assigned with a ‘Grade 1 Buddy’. They were introduced to one another and had their snack together at break time. This was very exciting for both Grade 3s and Grade 1s. The aim of our ‘Buddy’ system is to encourage older children to take care of the younger children and also to help the Grade 1s feel safe and protected by a familiar face. Over the year, the Grade 3 and Grade 1 Buddies will read stories and play games together and the Grade 3s will continue to check on their Buddies.
The system teaches many values like loyalty, kindness and caring for others and most importantly represents our Elkanah House value of Thinking Beyond Self.

The Grade 00 Chameleons at the Blouberg campus have enjoyed settling into their new learning environment and exploring all it has to offer.
We started off learning all about our namesake "The Chameleon". We have learnt so many incredible facts about this colour-changing, camouflaging, hissing reptile. So much so, that we have been on the hunt to see a live chameleon. There was much excitement when one of the children brought a chameleon to school to show the class. Here are some of the children's own depictions of a Chameleon.

The trainees are auditioned into the 3 year training programme which prepares them for a professional career in the dance industry. 𝗪𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗡 𝗕𝗬 : 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗻𝗮𝗵 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘀 (𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝟭𝟮)
On Saturday the 28th of January the Revival and Environmental leaders organised a hike along the Pipe Track of Table Mountain. While the journey took an unexpected turn with regards to some unpleasant weather, it is safe to say that the outing was a true adventure.
Not only did we learn to prepare for every type of weather condition for any future hikes, but we also learned how important it is to love our neighbours and trust in the Lord even in the hardest of times. As an Elkanah family we made it to the end of the Pipe Track, stronger than when we started. This hike was a great opportunity to spend time in nature and appreciate God’s wonderful creation. We were also privileged to bear witness to the most spectacular rainbow along the way which only proved that after every storm, there really is a rainbow!

The Covid-19 pandemic, leading to the closure of schools initially, and their re-opening to limited numbers now, has changed the way in which schooling and learning is presented, probably forever. New approaches are required to prepare our students and teachers for these challenges and opportunities, not just with a tech-based approach but also more importantly with a new mindset for the future of schooling and learning as a whole ....
