ELKANAH HOUSE CELEBRATES ACADEMIC BRILLIANCE IN THE IEB CLASS OF 2025

Elkanah House High School in Cape Town is celebrating another exceptional academic year following the release of the 2025 Independent Examinations Board (IEB) matric results. With a flawless 100% pass rate, all 78 candidates successfully completed their final school examinations, a proud moment that reflects the school’s continued commitment to academic rigour, personal growth and excellence.

Of the 78 students who wrote the examinations, an impressive 77 achieved Bachelor’s Degree (BD) passes, representing a 98.7% BD pass rate, while one student achieved a Diploma (D) pass. These outcomes reaffirm Elkanah House’s reputation for preparing students thoroughly for the demands of tertiary education and beyond.

The Class of 2025 distinguished itself not only through the pass rate, but through depth of academic performance. Collectively, students achieved an outstanding 208 Subject A symbols, including one Further Studies Mathematics distinction, alongside 168 Subject B symbols, which included a further 12 distinctions in Further Studies Mathematics and English. This equates to an average of 2.66 Subject A symbols per candidate, a remarkable achievement across a broad and demanding curriculum.

These results speak not only to academic ability, but to resilience, discipline and consistency, qualities that have defined the cohort throughout their high school journey.

Several students achieved exceptional individual results. Leading the cohort was Joshua Valentini , who attained an extraordinary 8 Subject A symbols .

Students achieving 7 Subject A symbols were: Kayleigh Botes, Reuben de Rooy, Amber Kohlhofer, Sid Oldroyd, Lethabo Rahube and Willow Rutters.

Those who earned 6 Subject A symbols include: Danielle Ellis, Mitchell Mackay, Meaghan Mawhinney, Tamika Mhango, Niah Nairn, Tyra von Mollendorff and India Webster.

These students exemplify academic excellence, commitment and a genuine love of learning.

Reflecting on the achievements of the Class of 2025, Principal Danielle Muller expressed immense pride in the cohort’s success: “These results represent far more than academic performance — they reflect the perseverance and integrity of this remarkable group of young people. Each distinction tells a story of determination, support and belief. Each result which is an improvement on past results speaks to a culture of excellence from students and staff. We are immensely proud of our students and excited to see how they will build on this performance to shape their futures and contribute to the world beyond our campus.”

The success of the Class of 2025 is the result of a collaborative effort between dedicated teachers, supportive families and students who embraced challenge with curiosity and courage. Is my child ready for Pre-School?

Commonly, children 3 to 6 years of age are enrolled into a preschool where they are taught a combination of fundamental, play based learning, hands on activities and developmental skills. Pre-schools or nursery schools play an integral role in early childhood development.

Sending your child to pre-school is a significant milestone in their early development. It's a time when they begin to socialise, learn, and explore the world outside their immediate family. High-quality, and nurturing preschools can help improve a child’s reading skills, basic math skills and vocabulary in their early years of development. In addition, preschools can reinforce vital social skills such as sharing, making friends, teamwork, following simple direction and the ability to think independently. These skills can contribute to the development of a child, physically, emotionally and socially but how can you be sure that your child is ready for preschool?

But as a parent, you may wonder, "Is my child ready for pre-school?" It's a valid question that many parents grapple with, and fortunately, there are several signs to look for to help you determine if your child is prepared for this next step in their educational journey.

Social Skills: One of the primary indicators of pre-school readiness is your child's social skills. Do they enjoy being around other children? Are they curious about making new friends? While it's normal for some children to be shy initially, a willingness to interact with peers and participate in group activities is a positive sign that they're ready for the social environment of pre-school.

When broaching the private versus public debate, it’s important to remember that your child’s education is about a lot more than gaining knowledge.

Smaller class sizes

Studies have shown that smaller, more focused classes result in higher academic results. This is because a lower teacher-to-learner ratio means a child receives more individual attention, time for the teacher to see how each child learns as an individual, and the time to craft lessons and activities accordingly so that they teach in a more personal way. Unfortunately, because of various reasons, classes in many public schools are overfilled beyond capacity and teachers are overwrought with 40-plus students in a class.

The absolute limit in class size at Elkanah House is 26 learners. Keeping classes small is part of the DNA that forms our unique culture. We call this the ‘Elkanah Way’

Why subject choices are important

Your child’s subject choices for Grade 10 and beyond impact what they can study, which in turn impacts their career path.

For a Grade 9 student, decisions around tertiary studies and career paths may seem like a lifetime away. Your child will soon be making choices that may impact their options at tertiary level.

Where to start?

Know the basics

At the end of Grade 9, your child will need to choose a minimum of 8 subjects. Four of these subjects are compulsory:

a Home Language,
a First Additional Language (unless your child qualifies for immigrant status),
either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, and
Life Orientation (LO).

Then there are at least four elective subjects, which your child needs to choose.

There are different Matric pass levels. The level your child achieves will impact their access to tertiary study options:

A Bachelor’s Pass (previously known as a Matric with exemption)

Can apply for a degree at a university
Obtain at least 40% for Home Language (Elkanah House offers English H.L.)
Obtain at least 50% in 4 subjects (excluding LO)
Obtain at least 30% in another 2 subjects (may include LO)
Home language needs to be either English or Afrikaans in order to meet the language requirement for further study at a South African institution

A Diploma Pass

Can apply for a Diploma at a University of Technology (UT), some Universities as well as some private institutions
Obtain at least 40% for Home Language (Elkanah House offers English H.L.)
Obtain at least 40 in 3 other subjects (excluding LO)
Obtain at least 30% in 2 other subjects (may include LO)
Home language needs to be either English or Afrikaans in order to meet the language requirement for further study at a South African institution

Know your child

Who your child is as an individual, their interests, and talents are key factors to consider in this momentous decision. Resist the urge to let them choose subjects just because they can easily do well in them, or because they like the teachers, or because their friends are choosing those subjects. This choice affects the rest of their lives, so consider and discuss the following questions with your child:

What really interests you? If, for example, your child enjoys Life Sciences, a career in something to do with human anatomy or ecology may be suitable. Someone who enjoys art or languages may be interested in pursuing something in the creative field. Knowing this general direction can help guide you and your child towards the right subject combinations for their fields of interest.
What are the jobs of the future? A lot of the future job market is going to deal with career options and challenges that we can’t fully plan for. So, try to keep your child’s options open for these possibilities.
What are the academic and time demands to consider? The subject set best suited to your child takes their abilities, interests, skills, and motivation into consideration. They must be able to thrive in their chosen field, so be realistic about what’s in their best interests.

Know your options

Without the right combination of subjects – and the required marks – your child may not have the minimum requirements to apply to the university or college of their choice, or to be able to pursue the career path they are interested in.

Over and above the different pass requirements, each tertiary institution has their own minimum entry requirements – as do the courses they offer. When your child applies to university around April in Grade 12, they will have to produce their final Grade 11 promotion results, and these will be used to determine their APS (Academic Point Score). This will, in turn, determine what programme/s they can apply for. Research the requirements of each tertiary institution by visiting their websites. This will give your child a guide on what specific subjects are needed for the field of study your child is interested in.

Find guidance

Settling on a career choice is a big decision, especially for teenagers. Help your child through the process by keeping communication lines open and offering support and advice. Help them research different career options, tertiary institutions, and their requirements.

Your child’s LO teacher may have already helped them explore subject choices and career aspirations. Consider consulting an educational psychologist or career guidance specialist for an assessment that may further assist you in making a decision. Attend Open days at the tertiary institutions in which your child is interested in attending or find a mentor in the field of study they are interested in and let them engage with this person.

Encouraging a Growth Mindset

As many of you know, a Growth Mindset is a big focus for an Elkanah House education. An easy way to explain the concept is to compare the brain to a muscle.

When you exercise a muscle, it grows. When you exercise the brain, it grows too - and you learn more! There is no limit to how much you can learn. Teaching this concept to children at an early age will offer them much in terms of resilience and a “Let’s do it” attitude.

We all know life can be challenging, but instead of your children fearing those challenges and saying things like, “It’s too hard” or “I can’t do it”, we want them to rather seek out the opportunity in the challenge. Growth Mindset kids should say, “I can’t do it yet, but I’ll figure it out” or “Yes, I will try!”.

Encourage your children to let you know if there is something new, they would like to try, then help them go for it. By nurturing their inquisitive minds, you will help them gain confidence and many new skills.

While we have a Growth Mindset covered at school, we want to help you nurture the same at home and in your family activities. Below are some ‘Not This, Rather That’ comments you want your children to be able to say and some Growth Mindset activities to try at home.

Growth Mindset activities to try at home

1. The New Challenge

To encourage your child not to shy-away from things that scare them, introduce a monthly New Challenge into your family activities. Pick an activity that your child finds hard to do. For example, if they fear horses, then take them on a horse grooming session where a stable hand can help them get closer to, and learn more about, horses. Or, if they are struggling in maths then introduce the family ‘Mathletics’ game. Maybe 10 maths questions in 10 minutes. There is no failing – only winning when they try!

2. GM (Growth Mindset) Movie Night

Movies can really help children to develop a Growth Mindset – especially stories where a character has overcome severe challenges. Once you have watched a movie like this, discuss the characters with your children and what they would have done in that same situation. Great movies to watch for Growth Mindset development are:

· Forest Gump

· Brave

· Finding Nemo

· The Pursuit of Happiness

· Moana

3. The Interview

Get your children to interview people in their lives that are NOT family, about their challenges, their hopes and their day-to-day lives. This person could be a teacher, a coach, the family helper, the security guard at your complex. Get them to ask questions such as:

What do you love most about your life?
What is a serious challenge for you?
How do you overcome your challenges?
What are your hopes for the future?
How do you plan to achieve these?

4. Fold an Origami Animal

To begin, ask your child to fold an origami animal with no instructions at all. When they are about to explode with frustration, talk to them about how they feel. Then give them some instructions to learn how to do it. Then ask your child to fold their animal again, after having the information in their brains. The importance of learning! Kids will learn that sometimes it’s hard but try, then learn how and do it again.

As a parent, you may think ‘Maths Lit’ is the equivalent of Standard Grade maths from back in the day when you were at school. However, the truth is that Maths Lit is not Standard Grade maths – in fact it’s very different. Here’s what you need to know.

What is Mathematics Literacy?

As a subject, Mathematics Literacy focuses on calculating budgets and investments, interpreting statistics, working out loan prepayments and interest, as well as calculating income tax, and other commonplace matters that relate to figures. It’s more of an everyday type of maths that teaches you how to tackle the practical real-world problems that come up in life.

How is it different from Pure Mathematics?

In Pure Mathematics, learners deal with theories and concepts that aren’t necessarily experienced in everyday life. This subject focuses on things like algebra, trigonometry, and basic calculus. It’s the type of mathematics that studies numbers and shapes, and the relationships between them. The basis of the subject is to teach learners to think critically when problem-solving and uses a lot of abstract thinking.

Tertiary education and careers with Mathematics Literacy

No matter how you look at it, maths can be a very difficult subject – both Mathematics Literacy and Pure Mathematics require hard work and dedication. And while it may seem too early for your child to decide exactly what they want to do with the rest of their lives, the subject choices they make now could affect the opportunities they have in the future.

Universities, colleges, and other tertiary education institutions have certain Mathematics requirements for the courses and qualifications. It’s a good idea to investigate this as you help your child make the choice between Mathematics Literacy and Pure Maths.

When it comes to pursuing a future in STEM-related fields, Pure Maths is a minimum requirement for acceptance into university courses. The kinds of careers these include are:

Medicine
Engineering
Economics and analytics
Genetics
Accounting
Physics

If your child is more artistically or linguistically inclined, Mathematics Literacy could be the way to go. For further studies and qualifications in the arts and social sciences, Mathematics Literacy is a minimum requirement. The kinds of careers these include are:

Advertising and marketing
TV, radio and film
Teaching and academia
Politics and advocacy
Writing and publishing
Law

Choosing subjects can feel like a weighty dilemma, so it’s always best to do your research and make an informed decision. Spend some time with your child researching different career fields, the minimum study requirements for these, and the real-world jobs that they could lead to. There are a few local career guidance questionnaires that can be found with an online search that can help you figure it out. If you need to, seek career guidance from a professional or psychologist.

And over and above the career consideration, you need to consider the well-being of your child. If your child is battling with Pure Maths, and getting bad grades, this can affect their overall point score in matric, not to mention their confidence. Children that are doing well in Maths Lit may not pursue the STEM careers they hoped for, but they will get better points for university exemption and may just be happier children overall.

At the end of the day, the decision is guided heavily by who your child is and what they want to do, so take the time to learn all the facts.

WINTER WAMTH DRIVE

Elkanah House has had such an overwhelming response to our Winter Warmth Drive that we will be continuing with the collection for the rest of July. There is such a dire need for Winter Warmth in our community, so if you can, please help donate warm blankets or clothes so that everyone can feel the “Madiba Warmth” this winter.

We will be donating these care packages to the patients admitted to the Hospital of Hope intermediate care facilities, CTICC as well as Brackengate.
