At the forefront of our efforts toward sustaining our environment, Elkanah House incorporated a Recycling Initiative in 2010.

Students, parents and staff members combine efforts for this cause and every week, from Monday to Wednesday, we collect an average of 4 000kg of recyclable waste on our respective campuses per week. Not only are we supported by our students, parents and members of staff, but residents of our surrounding communities have joined hands with us to collect and drop off recyclable waste at our campuses, lending a helping hand towards our passion for conservation.

The initiative has grown phenomenally, to a level where it is now able to support other projects which promote environmental consciousness.

The Recycling committee is made up of a representative from each campus as well as other interested parents.  The members help to co-ordinate and manage the various projects the committee is involved with.

Pupils also assist in running the weekly collections as part of the Elkanah House community service programme.  Our Gr.6 pupils at the senior primary are able to earn 'social outreach' points by volunteering to do recycling duty on a Tuesday morning before school.

The Recycling initiative generates an income from WastePlan for the recyclable materials collected.  These funds are channeled into a number of other projects which encourage sustainable living such as:

Worm Bins -- kitchen waste being put to good use in taking care of our beautiful gardens!

Water Coolers at all campuses which  encourages children to enjoy the benefits of clean fresh
quality drinking water while reducing plastic/bottled water usage

Recently completed our first sensory garden at Sunningdale Prep campus for pupils to learn from
       and enjoy!

Events Recycling – providing the smart, user-friendly new bin-banks adds a new avenue of
managing our waste more effectively during the many events hosted at our campuses

Extending Our Impact

DuNoon Swop Shop - In conjunction with Beyond Education, Elkanah House Recycling has
extended its support towards this project in the heart of Du Noon Township.
Here, the community
members are invited to drop off bags of recyclable waste, in return for an item/s from the swop
shop. Our Recycling Committee drives initiatives for collection of secondhand items towards the
shop, and on a regular basis also donates new items for the shop inventory. To read more about
       the DuNoon Swop Shop, click

We also have a stand at the Schoolyard Market providing information and awareness around
Eco-friendly living : by showcasing various ‘green’ products, promoting  shopping bags to curb
the use of plastic packets, and selling indigenous plants, we are able to carry through the
       Reduce, Reuse, Recycle theme.
