Invitational World Youth Intercity Mathematics Competition (TAIMC)

The City of Cape Town has been represented at the PMWC for the past 8 years and more recently at the TAIMC. Participation in these competitions is highly esteemed and strictly invitational. This competition is hosted at Elkanah House, where the selection rounds and training takes place.

Pupils from public and private schools in the Western Cape, including disadvantaged communities are welcome to write the first Mathematics test at Elkanah House High School. The top achievers will be invited to participate in the second and final selection round after which successful applicants will be chosen to represent the City of Cape Town in Hong Kong and Taiwan respectively. In addition, a non-travelling reserve will be announced for each age group.

As part of our commitment to developing the Mathematics talent, the selected teams as well as the top achieving pupils will be invited to attend Mathematics training in problem-solving, lateral thinking, numeracy, geometry and critical thinking in the run up to the teams’ departures. They are exceptional academic achievers, having competed against more than 200 of the top Grade 7 and Grade 9 Mathematics pupils from the Western Cape to secure their place in the Cape Town teams.

Aims of the competitions are to:

 - Provide an opportunity for the exchange of information of Mathematics educators throughout the world.

 - Foster friendly relations among school students from different cities.

 - Discover the Mathematics potential of gifted students among different walks of life.

Pupils who are selected to represent Team Cape Town are required to have a valid passport.

Taking Mathematics Development to the Next Level

To assist in developing Mathematics in underprivileged areas, Elkanah House has implemented the
“Collect-a-Calculator” initiative. The school has donated hundreds of new and second hand calculators to impoverished schools in the West Coast area, as well as in the Eastern Cape.

Scholarships are also offered to disadvantaged students with academic potential. Academic bursaries are offered to grade 8 and grade 10 students, focusing specifically on Mathematics and English.

Teachers from disadvantaged communities are also roped in at a well teachers training programme, held annually in conjunction with a panel of WCED advisors.

The annual Mathematics Conference held by Elkanah House, has become a regular fixture on the local Mathematics calendar, used by IEB schools as well as several government schools.
