After the thrill and excitement of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” in 2008, where the Theatre@Elkanah rocked to the melodies of this iconic Lloyd-Webber musical, the theatrical production team of Elkanah House turned their attention to the next musical. 2010 was to be the year of “Fiddler on the Roof”, a completely different type of musical entirely. As with Joseph it would be an all school event with a live orchestra , beautiful costumes and sets.
“Fiddler”, set during the time of the Russian revolution took the 100 strong cast and crew on a moving journey through the joys and suffering of Tevye, his family and community as they were forcibly removed from their home Anatevke. Songs like “Tradition”, “Sunrise, Sunset” and “If I were a Rich Man” will live forever in the hearts of the young cast. Soon after the final performance, the same creative team began the search for the next musical to grace the stage of Theatre@Elkanah.
As these famous musicals are heavily copyrighted, the negotiations with Dalro were made in January 2011. It was to be “Hairspray” in 2012, a popular show with schools. This musical was made famous by the film with John Travolta in the role of Edna. The show is set in the 1960s and takes place during the Civil Rights Movement in the town Baltimore. It deals with the struggle to be accepted in a world where only the “lovely” are appreciated. Tracy, the plump teenager and her mother Edna ( played by a male)teaches a whole lot of wisdom in this musical triumph. “Good Morning Baltimore” and “You can’t stop the Beat” are just two of this musical of show-stoppers. The costumes and sets are iconic 60s and along with the live orchestra playing the classic 60s style of music, the audience can be assured of a riot of an evening!
The question is what will it be next?
