The Elkanah House Environmental Policy aims to create an eco-friendly built environment – sustainable, efficient and as local as possible.
Renewable materials used in constructing the theatre include South African pine trusses and Tasmanian oak flooring, both from sustainably managed forests. The Isotherm blanket insulation used in the building is made from recycled PET plastic bottles and is completely recyclable.
The theatre uses natural displacement ventilation, where hot air is expelled through high-level roof vents, with fresh air being supplied through grilles just below the seats. This provides an excellent natural air quality. Natural light has also been incorporated wherever possible, with automated blinds to provide blackout if required. The light-coloured roof sheeting on the classrooms was chosen to reflect sunlight and minimize heat gain.
Devices that use less water have already been installed, including dual-flush toilets and low-flow spray taps to basins and sinks
We also actively involve our pupils in recycling and have since our launch collected over 250 000kgs of reyclable material with the help of WastePlan and we continue to grow this even further. For more information on recycling at Elkanah House please click here.
Elkanah House is also actively involved in community projects and outreach. Our ideal would be to see all Elkanah House leavers participate in sustainable and environmentally-responsible activities which, together with community building and outreach, encourage our children to learn beyond examinations, love beyond self and live authentic lives.
