Creating a Platform for Tomorrow’s Leaders in Critical Thinking

Our role in the world of Mathematics in a diversity of surrounding schools

For the past 8 years Elkanah House has annually represented the City of Cape Town by hosting the Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Competition and more recently taken on the Invitational World Youth Intercity Mathematics Competition.  Participation in these competitions is highly esteemed and strictly invitational, also including schools from disadvantaged communities.

Schools from across the Western Cape are invited to participate and papers are internally set and marked by Elkanah House staff.  Qualifying students, assisted by their trainers, undergo intensive training in problem-solving, lateral thinking, numeracy, geometry and critical thinking.  They are exceptional academic achievers, having competed against more than 200 of the top Grade 7 and Grade 9 Mathematics students from all over the Western Cape to secure their places in the Cape Town teams.

Aims of the competitions are to:

 - Provide an opportunity for the exchange of information of Mathematics educators throughout the world.

 - Foster friendly relations among school students from different cities.

 - Discover the Mathematics potential of gifted students among different walks of life.

The Po Leung Kuk and  Taiwan International Mathematics Competions 2012 kick off at the Elimination Round 1, taking place on 1 March 2012, at the Elkanah House High School Campus. The second elimination round will take place on 15 March, and final rounds will take place internationally during July.

Taking Mathematics Development to the Next Level

To assist in developing Mathematics in underprivileged areas, Elkanah House has implemented the
“Collect-a-Calculator” initiative. The school has donated hundreds of new and second hand calculators to impoverished schools in the West Coast area, as well as in the Eastern Cape.

Scholarships are also offered to disadvantaged students with academic potential. Academic bursaries are offered to grade 8 and grade 10 students, focusing specifically on Mathematics and English.

Teachers from disadvantaged communities are also roped in at a well teachers training programme, held annually in conjunction with a panel of WCED advisors.

The annual Mathematics Conference held by Elkanah House, has become a regular fixture on the local Mathematics calendar, used by IEB schools as well as several government schools.
